I just learnd about a new domain top level domain (TLD) that will be available for sale in the US with no restrictions starting July 17.

I found out about it from a pre-registration email that I received from Godaddy.

It seems that ICANN originally approved assigning the .ME domain to the country of Montenegro, which declared independence from Yugoslavia (.YU) in 2006.

Montenegro then allowed people from other countries to own .ME as well.

Since .ME sounds very familiar in many languages, it could be a good investment for someone who believes that it can retain value over time, and help increase traffic to his/her site.

I checked and found pizza.me is available, however blog.me was taken.

This sounds great, however the price isn’t cheap.

Godaddy charges $49.99/year and requires any name to be registered for 2 years. This is close to $100 per domain name investment.

It can even cost you more…

During the open pre registration (Landrush) period May 6, 2008 to June 26, 2008, if they receive more than 1 application for a given domain name, they will auction the domain and award the highest bidder.

This kept me thinking, and I am still undecided…

What do you think about it?

Would you be interested in getting a .ME domain, what would it be?
