Using your laptop in public could be risky, especially when you type passwords, check your bank, credit card account or type any sensitive information.

I read about a study from a security research that shows keyboards were not safe when transmitting information.

The study was conducted in Switzerland (School of Computer and Communication Sciences at EPFL ) on keyboards connecting via USB as well keyboards embedded in laptops.

Every keyboard type showed vulnerability. One was even vulnerable from a distance of over 60 feet.

The theory:
Data is sniffed by an antenna placed in the vicinity of the victim, that picks electromagnetic signals radiated from any keyboard key when pressed.

Lessons learned:
Don’t type any sensitive information ( passwords, credit cards, .. ) using your laptop in public.

To read more about the study, click here.

WordPress is becoming more popular day by day, has evolved from a blogging to a CMS platform.

I started learning about it from customers who sign up for my Hosting Service. More and more use WordPress than any other script offered.

It amazed me how easily you can make your site unique by adding some simple customization to your blog.

Available plugins, however, can add functionality to your blog that far exceeds blogging and CMS capabilities as you might think.

Yesterday, I came across an article by Raj Dash, who posted a list of 48 ways to build WordPress based sites.

He surveyed the different plugins and usages for WordPress.

Check it out!

I think you can find some ideas that might be useful to your need.

I don’t think Raj wrote about a membership based site, which is what I am currently thinking of doing.

So, if I am right, then the list could grow to 49…

Check it out here and let me know what you think.

Warning about sites offering free theme downloads, that alter the footer by adding links that the original authors did not include in the footer.

He pointed out at BlogsTheme.com, and TemplatesBrowser.com doing this practice.

I have seen a lot of internet marketers promoting blogging even alter blogs and offer them to their customers. – This is okay

Others sell blog sites that use know altered themes without even crediting the original author. – This is bad.

Here is my take: I think nothing is wrong with this practice as far as you:

Do not violate the “Terms of Use” set forth by the author.

For sure and of course, give credit to the author. Link to his/her site.

Yes, and give the author financially. I know, some authors who show a high count of downloads from their site. They also display a donation button. How much do you think they receive… If you don’t want to buy him/her a beer, then how about a starbucks coffee??

Getting hacked can cause a lot of headache, specially if you don’t know what to do about it.

Unfortunately, most bloggers and site owners don’t really care about it, as they don’t care about backups.

When I first experienced it, I asked around. The answers I received were all the same:

1) Keep changing cPanel password periodically and keep the password hard to guess. - OK

2) Always ask all your clients to keep their scripts updated to latest version at all time. – OK

3) Make sure your backups are up to date! – OK

4) Check your log files and make sure to block the culprit IP. - Sounds good.

5) Make sure mod security is installed on your server. - Yup.

All the above sounds great, but it does not and will not address the root cause of the problem.

If you want to change it with your custom message, edit the index.php file under your theme directory. In the file search for “Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.”. Replace it with any text you wish or you can add an image if you wish.

Anne Zelenka wrote a little post about the 404 pages, the good, the bad, and the poetic.

I didn’t think some sites were so creative. Take a look.
